What Credit Score Do You Need for a Panda Loan?

The short answer is: there is no minimum FICO score for a Panda Loan. The longer answer explains what Panda Loan actually evaluates — and why borrowers with FICO scores in the 400s and 500s get approved while some with higher scores get denied.

The Honest Answer: No FICO Minimum

Unlike traditional banks and credit unions that publish minimum FICO requirements (usually 580-660), Panda Loan does not have a published minimum credit score. The application accepts borrowers with scores across the entire FICO range — including those in the deepest subprime tier (below 580).

This is not unique to Panda Loan. Most tribal installment lenders follow similar underwriting models because their borrower base is specifically subprime applicants. If they required prime credit, they would have no customers.

What Panda Loan Actually Looks At

Instead of FICO scores, Panda Loan's underwriting evaluates four core factors:

1. Bank Statement Analysis (60% weight)

The last 60-90 days of your checking account activity. Are deposits consistent? Are there frequent overdrafts? Does income clearly exceed essential expenses?

2. Verified Income (25% weight)

Stable income source generating at least $1,200/month. W-2 employment ideal; 1099 gig income, SSI, SSDI, and pension also work.

3. Identity Verification (10% weight)

Confirming you are who you say you are. Matches name, SSN, address, phone, and date of birth across federal databases.

4. State Residency (5% weight)

Panda Loan products are not available in every state. Your zip code is the final check after other criteria are met.

Notice what is missing: FICO score is not in the top four factors. A soft credit check is performed, but mostly for identity verification and fraud screening — not as a pass/fail underwriting criterion.

Why a 500 FICO Can Get Approved While a 600 FICO Gets Denied

This actually happens regularly. Here is why:

500 FICO Approval Scenario

This borrower fits Panda Loan's model: stable cash flow despite a poor credit history. The bad credit is in the past, current finances are healthy.

600 FICO Denial Scenario

This borrower has a better FICO but a worse cash flow picture. The underwriting model flags them as higher risk despite the better credit score.

How to Maximize Approval Odds Regardless of FICO

30 Days Before Applying

  1. Set up direct deposit if you cash paper checks. Direct deposits are easier for underwriting to verify than cash deposits.
  2. Enable bank overdraft protection linked to savings or credit card. Prevents the small overdrafts that hurt your application.
  3. Avoid large unusual withdrawals that look like financial distress in bank statement review.
  4. Keep at least $100 in account at all times. Constantly-empty accounts signal cash flow problems.

At the Time of Application

  1. Request a reasonable amount. First-time borrowers should request $500-$1,500, not the maximum. Larger amounts trigger more scrutiny.
  2. Provide complete information. Incomplete applications are often auto-declined. Have all documents ready before starting.
  3. Apply Monday-Thursday morning for fastest manual review if needed.
  4. Be consistent. Name, address, phone, and employer info should match across your ID, pay stubs, and bank statements.

Will Applying Hurt My Credit Score?

No. Panda Loan uses a soft credit inquiry at the application stage, which does not affect your FICO score. You can apply and see if you pre-qualify without any credit impact.

A hard inquiry occurs only if you decide to accept the loan offer and sign the agreement. The hard inquiry typically drops your FICO score 5-10 points temporarily, with full recovery within 3-6 months of on-time payments.

What If My Credit Is Above 660?

If your FICO is 660+, you should not be applying for a Panda Loan. You qualify for much cheaper options:

The Bottom Line

Stop worrying about your FICO score and start focusing on your bank statements. That is what Panda Loan actually evaluates. Steady income, consistent banking history, and a reasonable loan request matter far more than the number on your credit report.

If you have recent overdrafts or unstable income, fix those first before applying. If you have FICO 660+, look at much cheaper alternatives. And if you fall in between, focus on presenting a complete, consistent application from a stable bank account — that is what gets approvals.
